Granby Road Car Park works

I wanted to inform you that we’re starting the car park extension and from next Tuesday 13th it will be closed for 6 weeks, we have put out lots of signs and posted on our facebook page.

Although we will have some short term complaints about parking and the inconvenience, this should be a good long term solution for the area.

Children's Play Areas

Following reports of likely cuts to funding for maintenance and provision of Children's play areas by Local Authorities, I have started a Government e-petition which proposes a levy on the Professional Football Clubs for some of their wealth to be used to provide play areas for our children.

As well as helping to provide an essential facility for young children the money invested in this manner, to help keep our children fit and active, could also increase the potential for those very children to go on to participate in football (as well as other sport of course).

I would be extremely grateful if you would consider passing the link onto your members in order that they may be able to encourage both their Members, I already have had signatures from Local Councillors in my home area, and from residents within their respective areas.

Muscliff Park - Petanque Update

The new Petanque facility has now been built on Muscliff Park. Several of us including Ward Cllrs and local residents with Council officers have set up a charity "Muscliff Whittaker Foundation" (named after our dear friend Ron Whittaker)

We were successful in obtaining monies from a grant Awards For All to help our set up costs. The charity's aims are to enhance the park and facilities and help support the Youth centre and Community Centre.

The Plymouth Brethren built the 5 terrains for free as dear Ron had assisted them in finding a base in Broadway Lane many years ago and this was their way of saying thank you!

A Muscliff Petanque Club has been set up and this will be the only Petanque facility in Bournemouth!

Muscliff Park - Petanque Terrains

On Saturday 25th February we have 5 Petanque Terrains being built on the park at Muscliff.

We have set up the Muscliff Whittaker Foundation to enhance the park's facilities and to support the Community Centre and Youth Centre.

We are a charity and have been successful in being awarded a grant from Awards For All for our set up costs.

The Foundation Board is made up of Councillors, local residents and we have advice from Council officers.

We are fortunate enough to have the Petanque being built by the Plymouth Brethren who are based in Broadway Lane (Our dear friend Ron Whittaker helped the Plymouth Brethren find the site and get them the permission etc to be based there).

Brian Pester who is leading the project told me they are doing this for us for free in memory and thanks to Ron. Thank you!

Petanque is like boules which is played in France and we are hoping the local community will join in and join the Petanque club which will be based at Muscliff. Of course informal play will be available.

We are always looking for more volunteers and anyone who is interested please let me know.

Ladies and Gentlemen

What an amazing day. Brian Pester and his team from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church were on site at 8am as promised. The crew of young men and woman worked hard with big smiles on their faces all day; they were professional, happy, obliging and efficient, it was a pleasure to be amongst them; they were a credit to themselves and their Church.

We have ended the day with the foundations, fencing and lighting installed. On Monday the top dressing of granite will be applied and the lights connected up. From that moment the terrain will be ready for use.

If there are some volunteers from amongst the Petanque players to assist on Monday afternoon it would be helpful. We will have a lorry load of granite chippings delivered to the terrain, we will need to spread and rake it. Many hands make light work. Let me know please if you are available from 2pm for about an hour.

Will keep you informed of progress. We received continuing support from the many members of the public we spoke to on the park and explained what we were doing, absolutely no negativity, many spoke of coming to join us when the work is complete; ‘what a great community idea’ was the comment most heard.

The Bournemouth U3A group will meet at Ashley Cross again on Wednesday but hopefully after that they will meet where they belong, in Bournemouth - at Muscliff.

The topic is the A338 and the proposals for this road (Cooper Dean end)

Area Forum

On Thursday 16th March 2017 at 7pm at Bournemouth School For Girls there will be a special Area Forum and the leader of the Council Cllr John Beesley will be attending to discuss the A338 and the proposals for the one large authority, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.

I am the Bournemouth Town Centre Poppy Appeal Organiser and also this year covering the Asda store at the Lansdowne.

The start date for Asda is Saturday 29th October from 10am till 6pm until the 12th November and the Town Centre starts on the 5th November finishes on the 12th November 10am till 4pm every day.

On the 5th November from 1pm till 3pm we have entertainment in the Square which the Mayor and Mayoress attend. If anyone could give a couple of hours it would be appreciated. In Asda you're in the warm and get a drink from MacDonalds!

Dear Councillor

Thank you so much for visiting yesterday and your continued support of our work within the Stour Valley.

Stour Valley footpath improvements project.

We will improve the main Stour Valley Way footpath from the end of the new boardwalk for up to 300m when it reaches the disabled fishing platform.

We will break up the existing surface and then add additional limestone to remove many pot holes and muddy sections. This work will greatly improve the main walking route along the river and in addition to the surfacing project we will be carrying out coppicing works to the willow trees to open up the path and allow more light in to add to the range of species growing along this stretch. Thank you for the offer of monies towards this project and it will benefit all site users.

Project costs will be around £2500, but a £1500 contribution would be gratefully received and put to good use in this area.

The other little improvements that you could assist with were the painting of the 1st lamppost on Granby Road and renewing the two road signs, we could really do with them being changed for something more in keeping with a countryside site and be more rural (routed wooden boards & posts if possible)

Dear All

This afternoon I met up with Tom Bennett at Kingfisher Barn in Granby Road, Muscliff to see the improvements to the walk ways and the fencing along the river to protect the cattle etc.

We have also managed to prepare everything for the planting of the cherry tree in memory of our dear friend Ron Whittaker who worked so hard for this area, an area he loved so much. He would be thrilled to see all the work which has been undertaken by our Stour Valley Rangers and volunteers and other Council officers.

On Tuesday 11th October at 2.30pm the Mayor has kindly agreed to plant the tree in memory of Ron and is invited to have a look at the new barn and centre and walk down to the river where there are wood sculptures, seats and viewing points for residents to enjoy.

Later on once the Granby Road car park is made bigger there'll be a walk way to the river named "Whittaker Walk Way".

After we have finished at the barn (there'll be a cuppa and biscuits) we'll be going to Redhill Park near to the Bowls Club where a tree will be planted in memory of Philip Whitelegg who was a Councillor for Redhill Park ward for nearly 50 years (my Dad).

Tree Planting Ceremony

There will be a tree planting ceremony on Tuesday 11th October at 2.30pm in memory of Ron Whittaker. The Mayor will be attending with Ron's widow Jackie and the tree will be planted in the Granby Road car park near to the Kingfisher Barn.

After that ceremony there will be another tree planted in memory of Councillor Anne Rey's dad Ald Philip Whitelegg who was on the Council for nearly 50 years and the tree will be planted in Redhill Park by the Bowling Club.

41 Bus Service

Up to £12,000 for your Local Green Space

The second funding round for the Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme opens on 18 April 2016.

The scheme is administered by Groundwork and funded by Tesco customers from the proceeds of the 5p charge for plastic carrier bags as a result of a government carrier bag levy.

Groundwork anticipate grants being awarded to successful groups around November 2016.

Bags of Help is available to a wide range of community groups and organisations across England, Wales and Scotland and they can apply for grants to improve local green spaces. Successful projects will go forward to a public vote in Tesco stores which will decide whether they receive a grant of £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000. Projects that will get the green light as a result of funding will include new pocket parks, sports facilities, schools, woodland walks and community gardens.

It will fund capital projects that provide community benefit and do not charge for access.

Asda Green Token Scheme support for BBS

Bournemouth Blind Society are one of the three charities in the latest Asda Green Token Scheme at their Castlepoint branch.

We will be part of their scheme for March and April 2016.

The charity receiving the greatest number of tokens will receive £200, with the other two getting £50 each.

If/when you shop at Castlepoint Asda, please ask for a green token and then put in our receptacle on the community noticeboard.

Please speak with your family/friends/acquaintances and encourage them to do the same to support Bournemouth Blind Society.

We are very excited by this innovative project - and so was Tesco - so much so that they have entered us into a competition with two other regional projects. The Winner will see their £8000 award increased by 50% to £12,000.

It helps connect children with nature and in particular the River Stour. As winners they will be able to increase their grant by 50%.

From Saturday 27 February to Sunday the 6 March 2016, residents have the opportunity to vote for our project at a range of Tesco stores in Bournemouth, so pop into your local Tesco to vote.

Bournemouth and District Horticultural Society Need Help

The Bournemouth and District Horticultural Society which was founded in 1884 and who the Mayor is a patron of, looks like it is going to fold due to lack of interest.

This will have an impact on Bournemouth as they are involved with a lot of flower shows, etc. There is only a small party of elderly volunteers who have plenty of drive but don’t know how to move the club forward.

Local Resident, Andy, has been involved with projects like this and so has joined them to help.

He has a lot of plans to put in place and wants to have a re-launch involving the Mayor and local MP's.

We are now taking bookings for Pokesdown community market, the first this year starting Saturday 26th April.

Our first General Market for 2014 will be on Saturday 26th April, thereafter general markets will alternate with a food market, to be held on the last Saturday of the month. If you wish to book a stall contact Rebecca Huseyin pokesdown.cfmarkets@yahoo.co.uk and answer the following questions.

1. Name/address/email address/telephone number/what you are selling. If you are selling food you must have an up to date hygiene certificate, see food market below.

3. There will be a charge of £5 per stall, to be collected on the day.

We know that one in eight people in the South West fear they won't be able to afford to pay the rent or mortgage at the end of this month. Yet many people in this situation would feel too ashamed to ask for help.

Shelter's helpline receives too many calls from people in desperation, and on the brink of losing their home, because bills and notices have been left unopened and problems have piled up.

This January we are encouraging those at risk to seek advice from Shelter and avoid problems spiralling out of control.

The Muscliff Family Funday committee have recently been awarded over £6,000 of Lottery Money (Awards for All) to buy equipment and necessary items to help this year's Funday and Music Festival to run smoothly. Any profits made from this one day event are used to provide extra facilities and opportunities within the Muscliff Park area.

Life as we know it

Young people from the Muscliff Youth centre who belong to the Young carers group have made a DVD called LIFE AS WE KNOW IT. The film was shown to elected members, council officers and other professional from organisations such as the NHS. The evening was a great success and the DVD was very well received.

As a result of the DVD which will be sent out to schools, youth centres and doctors surgeries, the young carers are planning a YC Mark Scheme that organisations can sign up to and agree to provide support for Young carers within their settings.

United by Balls Football Tournament

Half term has just been and gone and on Wednesday 29th May 2013 the Youth Centre helped the Zone area run the United by Balls football tournament at Littledown Sports Centre. Teams of Young People, Councillors and Youth Workers were all represented and played against each other. Apart from the brilliant team of youth workers a top performance by the Muscliff Seniors meant they came out as the best team winning the overall tournament!!

Thursday 30th May 2013 saw the annual Welly Wipeout (a bit like It's A Knockout) take place at Muscliff with a Junior event in the morning and a Seniors competition in the afternoon. Much fun was had and many got wet!! A good fun day for those that took part!!

I am writing to advise you that the landscaping works will start week commencing 17th September at this site to remove the macadam surfacing and reinstate with soil and seed. A 1.8 metre width of macadam with new edging will remain across the centre of the site to link the two access points with a footpath. These works will greatly improve the appearance of this redundant site.

The works will take approximately two weeks.

I have spoken directly with the immediate neighbours at the Durweston Close access and information signs will be erected on site.

Looking for volunteers / residents around Muscliff or Throop who would be willing to help plant spring flowering bulbs, mainly at Muscliff Park.

A day during late November is currently being planned when this will be undertaken. As many volunteers as possible would be helpful.

The Red Arrows

Red Arrows Bournemouth Crash

We would like to pay tribute to Flt Lt Jon Egging, the Red Arrows pilot, who was tragically killed on Saturday 20th August 2011 after an amazing air display with the Red Arrows team after the 4th Bournemouth Air Festival. Cllr Anne was at the Festival for the 4 days helping on a stall with the Bournemouth Veterans and Friends Association and when the news filtered through to the show there was complete shock.

What a brave and courageous man Jon Egging was to make sure the plane didn’t crash into houses in the Throop village area. The one minutes' silence on Sunday 21st August at 1pm along the seafront was very emotional. Thousands of people, both residents and visitors, stood together in silence to remember this brave pilot. Many people were wearing red to honour him and the Red Arrows.

Both Ron and Anne on behalf of the Throop and Muscliff Ward send our sincere sympathy to Dr Emma Egging and to the family at this very sad time.

Statement - Red Arrows

When the time is right the residents of Throop village wish to fund a memorial in memory of Flt Lt Jon Egging in the village area, and Ron and Anne will support this proposal, as it is a most fitting tribute to this hero.

The Youth Service has undergone a restructure and we now have "Zones" where there is a Zone leader for 2 or 3 Youth Centres our Zone leader is Natalie Cresswell who isn't a stranger to Muscliff having been the manager there some 10 years ago!

Natalie will manage Muscliff, Townsend and St Andrews in Charminster. Alex Dowding will remain the leader at Muscliff Youth Centre and the new programmes are in the process of being compiled.

The latest Parks Guided Walks and Events leaflet is now available, covering the period of September to December. The leaflet contains the latest list of our tremendously popular Monday Morning Meanders (average attendance during August has been 62 people per walk), as well as a wide range of guided walks and events taking place at weekends and some evenings.

New Litter Bin / Dog Bin

Public Toilets at Muscliff Park

The public toilets at Muscliff Park are now open daily until the 4th September and the funding for this has been paid for from the Muscliff Funday committee as we want to plough the monies back into the community.

Joint Statement from Councillor Anne Rey and Councillor Ron Whittaker to the residents of Throop and Muscliff Ward

Just 3 days after the local elections Cllr Derek Borthwick who stood in Throop and Muscliff as an Independent with Ron Whittaker and Anne Rey and won his seat for a second term of office crossed the floor to the Tories! This is the first time in Bournemouth that someone has switched parties in less than a week after being elected.

Apparently Mr Borthwick has been promised a chairmanship and possibly the Mayoralty in the next few years!

Ron and Anne are devastated and angry about Mr Borthwick’s actions as he has deceived them and the residents of Throop and Muscliff who voted him in as an Independent and not a Tory. We as Independents stood on the Martin Bell’s principles which include Integrity and Honesty. Clearly Mr Borthwick does not have either of these principles.

Ron and Anne will continue to serve the residents of Throop and Muscliff to the best of their ability and put people before politics.

Planning

28th April 2010

Also the planning appeal officer has informed us that the Co-op application for the corner of Broadway Lane and Castle Lane West (235 Castle Lane West) has been dismissed. The co-op’s appeal against the officers from Bournemouth’s Planning Dept hasn’t been granted on the grounds of access and that the proposed development would result in unacceptable additional risk to highway use.

Councillor Anne Rey attended the appeal hearing and is pleased with the result! All Ward members are especially with the access along this very busy road.

This is a partnership event with Dorset Police and the Bournemouth Council together with the three Throop and Muscliff Independent Ward Councillors.

The first 35 young people who come in with their bikes will get a full set of lights for £5

£5 donations will go to Bournemouth Lions Club who work for the community of Bournemouth.

Around 1,000 people celebrated the Bournemouth 2010 Bicentenary Celebrations on New Years Day in the Bournemouth Lower Gardens. The family event by the Bandstand included Bands, Singers and a fantastic Fireworks Display.

Motown Magic night and 70’s & 80’s music

The Little Lambs Playgroup at St. Paul's Church, Throop, a pre school play group for the under 3's have received £250 from our Throop and Muscliff Local Improvement Fund towards play equipment..

As a member of the local Bournemouth Lions Club, Councillor Anne Rey is very pleased that a further £200 has also been given towards equipment.

The Little Lambs Playgroup provides activities and learning for hundreds of young children in the Throop and Muscliff area.

St. Paul's Church in Landford Way Throop

Sadly we will be saying goodbyes to Canon Rob Peters and his wife Esther as they leave in the New Year to go to Chester. There will be more news nearer the New Year and we will keep you informed.

Poppy Appeal in the Town Centre

For a week this year daily (except Sunday) from 10am till 4pm.

Fantastic News - Nearly £15,000 poppy money has been raised from collections in the arcade and Bournemouth Town Centre. A massive thank you to all the residents of the town and a special thank you to Councillor Anne Rey for yet again organising such a hugely successful poppy appeal. Councillor Derek Borthwick was pleased to assist his colleague and helped sell poppies during the week.
