RE: Unauthorised encampment - Southbourne Overcliff/East Overcliff/Redhill/Muscliff Park

Dear Councillor and Officers

At this moment in time the only known unauthorised encampment is currently at Muscliff Park. We have asked The Police to exercise their discretionary powers under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to direct the unauthorised encampment to leave site. Unfortunately this currently does not meet the requirements for them to use this power. They have though assured us this will remain under review and that the Police will continue to monitor the site. We have now started the legal process in order to gain a land possession order. This may take 10-14 days if we have to use Court bailiffs in order to evict, although they usually vacate the site on the possession order being obtained . Security is in place and monitoring the situation.

On a more positive note the Police did instruct the group at Redhill to leave site this morning and the high court bailiffs have enacted both Writs of possession on both Southbourne and East Overcliff sites. These groups have currently left site. We have also bolstered defences in the for mentioned locations.

We however remain vigilant as the whereabouts of the Redhill and Overcliff groups is unknown, whilst we are still receiving reports of other groups in the area.

We will update with any further significant changes.
