News - Issues around the listed gas light column in Throop Village

Questions to the Cabinet Member for Transport, Cleansing and Waste from Councillor Whittaker:

Gas Lamps

Can one ask the cabinet member for an update on the gas lamps in both Holdenhurst and Throop village. When will the agreed prototype replacement fittings be in place so residents can then have the opportunity of seeing the far better light offered whilst still retaining the listed status of our last survival gas lighting in the Borough?

Response

The Lighting Engineer has contacted 'Sight Designs' - the company undertaking the refurbishment of the gas light for Throop and Holdenhurst. There has been a slight problem with one of the components but that has been overcome now. The company is hoping to be on site to install the refurbished unit either the week prior to Xmas or the first full working week in January.

Gas Light Column - Throop Village

Dear Cllr Whittaker,

We have sent one of the original gas units away for modification to the new more efficient version which you saw at the meeting with the gas man, which to all who view them should appear the same as existing. However the unit will have to meet the approval of the planning conservation team as the structures are listed. The intention is when the unit is modified to install it in situ to so that the conservation team can view and approve or not. If the modified version is acceptable we will look to have the other units modified and installed. This will be done in stages so that one all units arnt missing at once and two according to cost there may be budget constraints affecting the roll out and may have to be staggered over a couple of years. We should have the modified unit back in a few weeks.

Regards,
Chris Hardy,
Lighting Engineer, Bournemouth Council
