Letter to Bournemouth Echo from Cllr Ron Whittaker

Sir.

Ramp - Weir Bridge, Bournemouth

Ramp - Weir Bridge, Bournemouth

Having been made aware of the letter from my good friend Cllr Dennis Gritt requesting consideration be given to naming "Whittaker's Way" regarding the new weir bridge at Throop, this has been suggested before. I have thanked those but NO THANK YOU, this bridge long fought through was funded by Dorset County Council, [Bournemouth making a contribution], so my reward is seeing the new bridge, same time we have after a site meeting raised the real problem of the existing gravel/stone ramp to the bridge, impossible for any disabled chair/person. Dorset have agreed to replace with a smooth tarmac surface, what we continue here to raise is the long requested improvements to the paths north of the river leading from the bridge towards Pig-Shoot Lane for walkers/cyclists, including from the Bournemouth side to provide a new easy access via Hicks Farm to the bridge.

Having said all of this, after some 35 years of endless correspondence with the owners of Throop Mill. Requesting that they see the massive advantage of investment in securing the Mill as a visitor/tourist attraction, due to much of the machinery remaining intact what wonderful history to our young children adding to our lovely Stour valley, with a cafeteria/craft shop/and other attractions. That to me would be my reward. Will it ever happen!!
